Cost is the combined amount you will spend on the item(s) in question. Sure you may be able to buy a 20 year roof for less, but you'll end up replacing that roof 2 more times as compared to an Owens Corning roof. So even if you save now in the grander scheme of things it costs you more money.
This is why it becomes so important for your contractor to ask you questions like:
- How long do you plan on living in the house?
- What do you plan to do with the house?
- What are your future renovation plans?
- What is more important to you price or quality/longevity?
